Does Acupuncture Hurt? 5 Questions New Patients Ask

If you have been curious about acupuncture but aren't sure what to expect, you are not alone. Many first-time patients have concerns about needles and discomfort, and question if acupuncture is for them.

Acupuncture doesn’t have to be scary or painful and can help a broad range of issues.

Here are answers to five common questions patients ask before booking.

1. Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are filiform needles, extremely fine and very different from the larger needles used for injections or blood tests. Most people do not find acupuncture painful but that does not mean it is without sensation. So, what can you expect to feel?

When a needle is inserted you may feel a slight prick or nothing at all, followed by warmth, tingling, dull pressure, ache, zing or a slight grabbing feeling when the needle stimulates your qi. These sensations are temporary and fade quickly. Sometimes the needles are retained but with Five Element style of acupuncture it is more common for the needles to be turned and quickly removed.

Every patient experiences acupuncture differently. If anything feels uncomfortable, tell your practitioner. The needles can be adjusted or removed so the treatment remains manageable. Kate will never leave you alone with needles in!

2. How is Five Element acupuncture different?

Five Element acupuncture is an individualized approach. That means we do not use point prescriptions, we develop a treatment strategy unique to each person’s individual needs. This strategy is continually adapted as treatment progresses.

Symptoms are seen as a message that overall balance has been disrupted, and when balance is restored, symptoms tend to resolve. This approach can have longer lasting results than treating symptoms directly.

Five Element acupuncture follows laws of nature. The five elements are fire, earth, metal, water and wood, and can most easily be observed as we cycle through the seasons. Fire relates to Summer, Earth to Late Summer (harvest time), Metal to Fall, Water to Winter, and Wood to Spring. We can observe how the five elements support and control each other in the natural world to maintain balance, and apply those to our own health and wellbeing since we too are part of nature.

A Five Element acupuncturist diagnoses which of the five elements is our ”Causative Factor”, the underlying cause of imbalance. Focusing treatment on that element helps to bring the whole of us back into balance. This is unique to Five Element acupuncture.

3. What happens during the first appointment?

The first appointment includes a Traditional Diagnosis (TD), and initial clearing treatment called tapping for Aggressive Energy.

During the TD Kate asks about your primary concerns as well as your health history, lifestyle, diet, habits, hobbies, and other factors that may be relevant to your treatment. This detailed intake helps her develop a plan based on your individual needs. Kate will also assess your Causative Factor or CF, the element that is likely the source of your imbalance.

The clearing treatment is carried out for all new patients, since the body can retain “Aggressive Energy” during periods of stress or trauma, and this can hinder the healing process. Needles are inserted superficially in points of the back and retained until any redness around the needles is cleared. This can take 20 - 45 minutes. In some cases, another treatment may be recommended before Aggressive Energy clearing.

The treatment ends with needling points on your CF element, and you will be asked to return within 1 - 2 weeks for a follow up session. Most people report feeling lighter and sleeping better after this treatment.

The first appointment takes around 90 minutes, depending on how long it takes to clear aggressive energy. Follow-up visits are 45 - 60 minutes.

4. How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies from person to person. It will depend on your main concern, how long it has been present, your general health, and how you respond to treatment. More chronic issues can take longer to resolve.

Many patients notice a change after the first session, but sometimes it can take a few treatments before you feel a significant shift. Acupuncture is cumulative process and as the effects build you will be able to maintain progress for longer periods, and appointments can be spaced farther apart. The clinic recommends three to five weekly or biweekly appointments initially.

Acute issues will respond more quickly than a long-standing pattern. Persistent pain, prolonged stress, sleep concerns, or other chronic issues may require more time. Kate can discuss expectations after learning more about your health and goals.

5. Can I use insurance, HSA, or FSA funds?

Insurance coverage for acupuncture depends on your individual policy. Kate Mansfield Acupuncture is an out-of-network practice, so patients should check whether their plan includes out-of-network acupuncture benefits. This can be done by entering health insurance information using the ‘check health insurance coverage’ button link on Kate’s website.

Payment must be made at the time of the appointment, and will be reimbursed after receiving payment from the insurer. We can submit a claim on your behalf or provide a Superbill for you to submit a claim directly.

Acupuncture is also commonly considered an eligible expense for Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts. However, rules vary by plan, so confirm eligibility with your HSA or FSA administrator before treatment. The clinic can take payment with an HSA or FSA card.
